Families in Texas may have access to education funding options that help cover the cost of private schooling and alternative education pathways. Two commonly referenced programs are TEFA (Texas Education Freedom Accounts) and ACE Scholarships. While they sound similar, they are very different programs.

Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA)
Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) is a state-supported school choice program designed to give families greater flexibility in how their child’s education funds are used.
Through TEFA, eligible families may receive public education funds placed into an education account that can be used for approved educational expenses outside of traditional public schools.
Eligible uses may include:
TEFA is administered by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, and eligibility, funding amounts, and approved uses are determined by the State of Texas.

ACE Scholarships (Private, Need-Based Program)
ACE Scholarships is a nonprofit, privately funded scholarship organization, not a government program. ACE provides need-based tuition scholarships to qualifying K–12 students so they can attend participating private schools.
Key details:
ACE Scholarships operates independently from TEFA, but in some cases, families may use multiple funding sources if permitted.
